We don’t often speak about it this way, but puberty is one of the most sacred thresholds we cross. Awkward, uncomfortable, confusing – yes. But necessary. It teaches us who we are becoming. We don’t get to skip it just because it’s hard.

Adolescence shapes us. It challenges us. It asks us to shed the skin of childhood and become someone new – more capable, more responsible, more self-aware. It prepares us for adulthood – not just in body, but in identity. And though it’s messy, we honour it. We expect it. We make space for it.

So why do we not recognise, prepare for, and embrace the equally powerful transitions of motherhood and menopause?

Motherhood is not just a role – it’s a metamorphosis.
There’s a word for this powerful, identity-shifting transition into motherhood: matrescence.
Much like adolescence, it marks the beginning of an entirely new phase of life.

We leave behind the version of ourselves we once knew.
We grieve her.
And, in time, we begin to meet the new woman rising – the one who holds more. Feels more. Knows more.

We become not just caretakers, but creators of life. And it changes everything.

This is not something to resist.
You cannot fail at it.

It’s simply the next phase of becoming.

Matrescence is the puberty of motherhood – a transition so many walk through silently, wondering if the confusion, the shifts in identity, the emotional overwhelm are normal.

They are.

Just like puberty. Just like menopause.

Each transition carries us further along the spiral of womanhood.
We do not stay the same.
We were never meant to.

So let’s stop pretending we should.
Let’s start embracing the transformation.
Let’s honour what we shed – and celebrate what we become.
Let’s reframe the journey.

Because with every cycle of change,
we rise.

Wiser. Stronger. More ourselves than ever before.
