As a doula, I’ve walked alongside countless women as they navigate the intensity, beauty, and raw power of birth. I’ve seen it all – the quiet, instinctual labours that unfold like poetry, and the births that are clouded by fear, doubt, and external pressures. Yet through every birth, one truth remains: I can get any woman through a physiological birth – if she lets me.
But here’s the thing. It’s not really me who gets her through it. It’s her.
The Power Is Already Yours
So many women come into birth thinking they need someone to get them through it – a doctor, a midwife, a doula, a birth partner. They look outward, hoping for reassurance that they can do this. But the truth is, no one can do this for you. No one can birth this baby except you.
As your doula, my job isn’t to hand you power – it’s to help you see that you already hold it. My presence is a reminder of what you are capable of, a mirror reflecting back the strength, resilience, and instinct that already lives inside you.
If You Let Me, I Will Hold the Space for You
Birth is as much a mental and emotional process as it is a physical one. When a woman trusts herself, her body, and the birth process, physiological birth becomes something she flows through rather than something she fights against. But that trust has to come from her. I can’t force it.
If you let me:
- I will hold space for you to surrender to the process, to move through each sensation with trust instead of fear.
- I will remind you, when doubt creeps in, that you are doing this – that you have everything you need within you.
- I will do my best to fiercely protect the environment around you, so as little as possible disrupts the deep connection between you and your baby.
But if you don’t let me – if fear, conditioning, or external pressures pull you away from your own instincts – then no amount of support can replace the power that only you can claim.
The System Will Take Your Power – Unless You Hold Onto It
I won’t sugarcoat it. The maternity system is not built to honour physiological birth. It is built for efficiency, management, and control. Too often, women are guided away from their instincts, their options narrowed until they feel like they have no choice at all.
This is why understanding your own power is not optional – it is essential. You must know that you have the right to say no. That you have the right to ask for time. That your body and your baby are not on a hospital’s timeline.
I can guide you, but I cannot make these choices for you. You must be the one to claim them.
Birth Belongs to You
Physiological birth is not reserved for a lucky few. It is not something only ‘strong’ women can do. It is in you – it has always been in you. The question is, will you allow yourself to step into that power?
If you let me, I will walk this path beside you. I will remind you of your strength when you start to forget. I will create the space for you to move, breathe, and birth in a way that is deeply, unapologetically yours.
But in the end, you are the one who must birth your baby. You are the one who must own your power. And when you do, you will see – without a doubt – that it was never about me getting you through birth.
It was always about you stepping into the power that was yours all along.
